Russian River Brewing - Pliny the Elder IPA

Russian River Brewing fails to impress me with this 8% ABV IPA. While the Blind Pig knocked my fucking socks off, this IPA was just too strong. The label boasts "explosive hop character." That is a total fucking understatement. I felt the hops were over the top and the color and clarity was not what I look for in a beer. Call me a sissy if you will, but this beer was just too much. To call it overkill would not do it justice. I will stick with your Blind Pig, Russian River, and so should you. 3 out of 5. Don't drink it.

8%, though!
:-)
You ever had those smoked beers? I might've missed that post, but I'm a big fan of those.

I hate when something (or someone) promises something and then never follows through. Most of the men in my life have been the same. I'd rather have the beer. :)

just make sure it is a Blind Pig!

i've forwarded your blog link to a friend who has been cataloguing independent brews for years-both US and Canada-you two might have something in common, besides being crabby as hell, both of you!

Canadian beer sucks.

You have to be kidding-we have some of the best indie brewers in the world-now I admit that most of our industrial beer tastes almost as bad as Coors, Millers or Bud-being an ex-Yank myself, I only drank Dos Equis back in the day- but nothing approaches the sheer sucking awfulness of most non-brewpub beers, anywhere-have you even tried any of our indie beers? Doubt it...

I Granville Island (I think that is right) once and it sucked. Another time I had Okanagan Springs (I think) it was a winter solstice brew on tap at the Camby (sp?) in BC and to be honest it was killer.

Yeah, Granville Island sucks (now) as it was bought by a big industro-brewer a few years ago-so of course the formula changed-some Okanagan Springs is okay-but again, the beers you are naming are part of the Big Three here-not indie beers at all-if you get a chance try anything from Crannog-they even grow their own hops and barley, etc. Best beer I ever had-their draught is killer, I drank a few gallons of it one night, and no hangover-just beautiful beer the way it's meant to be-and I don't much like beer-wino myself, although not the gas station variety

Alas the only Canadian beers we get in Oregon are Kokanee and Molson. It will have to wait until my next trip to Canadia. But I will definitely keep my eyes peeled for Crannog.

This is an Ale.

A real ale. Suggest you stick with beers if you want them to taste like a beer.

This is one of the best IPA's I've ever had the pleasure of drinking.
